Hey Mayor! Look what Seattle did!

EXCITING NEWS!!

As of July 2010, the City of Seattle has banned all single use containers from restaurants and food establishments. This is in addition to a plastic bag ban.

Seattle implemented an impressive composting system to deal with the containers, that need to be recyclable or compostable. Cedar Grove Composting has been contracted by the City to pick up the commercial food service containers and 1,700 restaurants have signed up for the food waste collection.

Ok, this is old news now but I just heard it and I’m wondering WHY haven’t we followed suit?

LA JUST BANNED single use plastic bags!

San Francisco was the first US city to impose a limited ban of SUPB in 2007. Earlier this year, the mayor of SF expanded the ban and imposed a .10 cent fee on all other bags.

Other US cities imposing SUPB bans are Portland, San Jose, Santa Cruz, Washington D.C. and counting!

In Canada… the Premier of BC recently said that she does not support a plastic bag ban. Boo Christy Clark!

And the mayor of Toronto recently objected to the .05 cent plastic bag fee. In effect repealing the previous councils successful ban imposed in 2009. Boo Rob Ford!

Canada has A LOT of catch up to do.

Hey Mayor! Look what Seattle did! Please???

Say no to GMO. You are not an experiment.

I am so happy to know about The Non-GMO Project.

Finally, a reliable verification system to ensure what we are buying is not genetically modified.

Their strategy is to empower consumers to make change through the marketplace. And it’s getting some traction, right now there are a growing number of consumers demanding government mandated labelling of GMO products.

The most common GMOs are soy, cotton, canola and corn, many of these appear as added ingredients in a large amount of the foods we eat.

Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In nearly 50 countries, including Australia, Japan, Germany, Hungary, Peru and all of the EU countries, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs.

Purchasing GMO-free foods isn’t only about health, it’s about not contributing to bully corporations like Monsanto.

And I hate bullies.

I can’t get enough: recycled Post-it Notes

Have you ever really thought about Post-it notes?

In our house we use these handy little sticky notes for everything.

From grocery lists to…

wish lists to…

to-do lists to…

meal planning to…

“have a good day honey” notes…

As you can see, Post-it notes are kind of a thing around here.

I buy the recycled post-it notes. It’s an option. A good one.

Even if you can’t convince your office to change… at least 3M, the company that manufactures Post-it’s, is admirably doing the right thing:

  • All Post-it® paper is sourced from paper mills that are certified for sustainable forest management.
  • All Post-it® Notes are recyclable. Please recycle.
  • All Post-it® Notes sold in the U.S.A. are made in the U.S.A.
  • Post-it® Recycled Notes include a minimum of 30 percent post- consumer content.

Eco Cred: Recycled Notes are made from a minimum of 30% post-consumer content. The harder to find but better: Greener Notes are made with 100% recycled materials and a plant-based adhesive. We are hoping that 3M will become a leader in sustainably as per their initiatives.

So turn down the heat and put on your favourite sweater.

Help WWF take action against climate change.

From one pad to another… FROGBOX rocks!

Do yourself a favour next time you move… order FROGBOX.

We have used them twice now, most recently in November when the little guy was only 2 months old, talk about needing to simplify!

No messing about with cardboard boxes and packing tape. FROGBOX boxes stack perfectly on top of each other and are so sturdy, nothing gets crushed.

Frogbox is a dream to pack and look at how cute the boxes are! They drop off the reusable boxes in their biodiesel truck and pick them up at your new location. It’s a no-brainer.

Moving cities? No problem!

FROGBOX, which started in Vancouver, is now in 23 cities in Canada and the US and growing rapidly. Canadian cities include Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and more… check out all locations on their website.

Eco Cred: FROGBOX donates 1% of gross revenues to frog habitat restoration.

Frogs are the most threatened vertebrate group on Earth, with nearly one-third of the world’s 6,468 amphibian species in danger. At their current rate, frogs are disappearing faster than dinosaurs did.

Next time you move… call the Frogs!

A new year. A fresh start.

My new year’s reso is to BLOG.

I decided against resolving to start yoga for the 10th year in a row. I know myself by now.

I buy a yoga pass and go all of 2 times and… these days, being a stay at home blogger/mommy, I can’t waste like that!

Speaking of waste… why don’t I resolve to waste less? Ok… I resolve to waste less. I’ll figure out those details soon and share them with you.
